Cocktails of the Wasteland: Sipping Through the Chaos of Mad Max: Fury Road
This post-apocalyptic world is an unforgiving and barren land where the means to survive can be as toxic as the will to survive. Immortan Joe (Hugh Keays-Byrne) is the leader of The Citadel which controls water and as a result, agriculture. Max Rockatansky (Tom Hardy) is captured and taken to The Citadel where he is tested and marked as a universal donor which makes his blood valuable because The Citadel’s citizen, especially those favored by Immortan Joe are ill as a result of the apocalyptic nuclear fall out and possibly inbreeding. Max is forced to give a direct transfusion to (Nicholas Hoult) Nux, a sick War Boy and suspended to the front of Nux’s war vehicle to chase after Furiosa (Charlize Theron) a defecting lieutenant of Immortan Joe. Furiosa was commissioned to take a “War Rig” with water and produce for trade with Immortan Joe’s allies, but she was quickly found out to be taking something even more valuable to Immortan Joe and not for trade.
The Wives is our first cocktail, named after its inspiration, the five wives (Zoe Kravitz, Courtney Eaton, Riley Keough, Rosie Huntington-Whieteley, and Abbey Lee)of Immortan Joe who have been selected to carry his children. Beautiful, clean and draped in white, just like The Wives, this cocktail uses a base of crisp, clean gin and has sweet floral flavors from the Elderflower and Maraschino Liqueur. A little bit of sweetness and silky texture have been added to this drink with pear juice, lemon oleo saccharum and aquafaba giving this cocktail a beautiful yellow hue and a fluffy white top. Served in a coupe glass and garnished with a candied lemon ribbon. This is a delicious drink to quench your thirst while watching The Wives fight for their freedom with Furiosa as their liberator and Max, their protector.
As the rebel group looks for “The Green Place”, they are chased by Immortan Joe’s War Boys further and further into The Wasteland, our next cocktail inspiration. A riff on the popular cocktail Blood and Sand, The Wasteland blends together Mezcal, Sweet Vermouth, Blood Orange Juice, and Maraschino Liqueur giving this cocktail an acidic and citrus, biting flavor with a lot of smokiness much like the arid, dry land seasoned with the exhaust of the War Rigs that drive over it. Served in a rocks glass with a rim of rock sugar, course salt and cayenne pepper to add a sandy texture and overall alarming spice to really bring The Wasteland experience to this cocktail.
Mad Max: Fury Road is an action-packed fight for nearly all of its 2-hour run time. It is the fourth highly anticipated movie of the Mad Max saga with the first three movies starring Mel Gibson as Max, Tom Hardy in this movie and Jacob Tomuri as a cameo in the spin off Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga (a prequel to Fury Road). Mad Max: Fury Road is enjoyable as a standalone action movie, but the additional context of the additional movies from the franchise always enhances the experience. That being said, which Mad Max movie should we create cocktails for, next?
